The flowers are small, cheerful, and yellow—five petals measuring roughly 1 cm across, blooming in the summer heat. But the fruit is the plant’s masterpiece of defense. It is a schizocarp that splits into five hard, woody mericarps, each armed with two sharp, rigid spines. When dry, these fruits resemble the tribulus (a Roman caltrop—a four-pronged metal weapon thrown onto battlefields to cripple horses and soldiers).
