The genius of Episode 1 is that it doesn’t rely on jump scares. Instead, it builds dread using the mundane. A jar of sesame oil left on a windowsill. A child drawing a black dot on a paper doll. The sound of grinding stones at 3:00 AM. In Indian folklore, the Kaala Til is often used in rituals to ward off evil or, as we learn here, to bind it. The director uses extreme close-ups of the black seeds—showing them moving unnaturally against a grain of rice. By the 15-minute mark, you will never look at your spice rack the same way again.
