“The algorithm loves familiarity,” says Marcus Thorne, a media analyst at Creston Digital. “Streaming services don’t pay for movies anymore. They pay for ‘engagement hours.’ A weird, quiet indie drama might be a masterpiece, but it won’t keep subscribers on the couch for eight hours.
