The journey begins. Ichigo Kurosaki, a spiky-haired orange-head with a perpetual scowl, meets Rukia Kuchiki, a Soul Reaper who is injured while hunting a Hollow. To save his family, Ichigo absorbs her powers, becoming a substitute Shinigami. This season establishes the rules: Hollows, Soul Society (the afterlife), and Kon, the mod-soul stuffed lion.

The Shinigami fight back using "Hollowfication pills" to steal back their Bankai. Kenpachi Zaraki unleashes his true power. The Zero Division (Royal Guard) enters the fray. Non-stop action. Ichigo fights Grimmjow in a brutal rematch. The fight ends with Ichigo allowing his Hollow mask to fully cover his face, unlocking a monstrous power. Meanwhile, Rukia battles the 9th Espada, Aaroniero (who wears the face of her dead friend, Kaien).
